Drawing on the Academy's vision of inclusion, aspiration, high expectations and developing caring, resilient young citizens, I have refined the text to improve fluency, accuracy and coherence while maintaining a warm and professional tone. The revised version also strengthens the focus on diversity, community and personal development in line with the school's vision.
Intent
The Beliefs, Philosophies & Ethics (BPE) curriculum is designed to inspire students to develop a deep understanding of the diverse beliefs, philosophies and ethical perspectives that shape both their local community and the wider world. Through the study of a range of religions, worldviews and philosophical ideas, students explore how beliefs influence individuals, communities and societies.
At Lostock Hall Academy, we value inclusion, respect and aspiration. Our BPE curriculum encourages students to recognise and celebrate both the similarities and differences between faiths and cultures, fostering empathy, mutual understanding and a sense of belonging. Students are equipped with the cultural capital needed to engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues, appreciate diverse perspectives as well as understand how beliefs and values influence global events and human experiences.
Through their learning at Key Stage 3, students are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs, values and identity while developing the confidence to engage in respectful dialogue with others. We appreciate that students arrive at LHA from a variety of backgrounds and our curriculums reflects that diversity as well as not assuming any particular lived experience. By nurturing open-mindedness, critical thinking and ethical awareness, we aim to develop ambitious, caring and resilient young people who contribute positively to their communities, thrive in an increasingly diverse society and can respond to the challenges of the modern world.
Implementation
The BPE curriculum is delivered through engaging, knowledge-rich lessons that provide students with opportunities to explore religious beliefs, philosophical questions and ethical issues in depth. Students examine key teachings, practices, sacred texts and traditions from a range of world religions and worldviews, while developing the skills to analyse, evaluate and discuss different perspectives respectfully.
Learning is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and understanding over time, enabling students to make meaningful connections between beliefs, values and real-world issues. Through discussion, enquiry and reflection, students are encouraged to think critically, challenge assumptions and develop informed viewpoints. A variety of methods are utilised to assess learners who are given opportunities to demonstrate their learning in different ways.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 3, students will be able to discuss beliefs, philosophies and ethical issues with confidence, sensitivity and respect. They will demonstrate a secure understanding of how religious beliefs, practices and sacred texts influence cultures, values and ethical decision-making across different communities.
Students will be able to evaluate a range of viewpoints, communicate their own ideas thoughtfully and engage constructively with perspectives that differ from their own. They will possess the knowledge and cultural understanding needed to appreciate diversity and promote inclusion, both within their local community and as global citizens.
Ultimately, the BPE curriculum develops informed, reflective and compassionate young people who embody the values of Lostock Hall Academy: learners who aspire to achieve their best, respect others and make positive contributions to society now and in the future.
