Curriculum Overview

At Lostock Hall Academy, our curriculum lies at the heart of our mission to educate and shape the future by inspiring aspirations for all. From Year 7 to Year 11, students experience a broad, ambitious and carefully planned curriculum that equips them with the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive both academically and personally.

Our curriculum provides the full breadth of knowledge, skills and experiences that students need to become confident, resilient and responsible young people. It promotes deep learning of the core knowledge and disciplinary skills that underpin success across subjects, while preparing students for further study, training, employment and active participation in their communities.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that essential concepts and skills are introduced, revisited and developed over time. This enables students to make meaningful connections in their learning, deepen their understanding and grow into independent learners with the confidence and aspiration to achieve their full potential.

Intent

At Lostock Hall Academy, our curriculum intent is simple: to ensure every student is engaged, participating and supported to thrive in a safe, inclusive and stimulating environment. Through high expectations, academic integrity and exceptional relationships, we equip young people with the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours needed to succeed and contribute positively to society.

We aim to:

  • Provide a broad, ambitious and knowledge-rich curriculum that gives students the academic foundations and cultural capital needed for success in further education, training and employment.
  • Inspire aspiration and ambition by enabling every student to achieve their personal best and recognise their potential.
  • Develop character through our core values of respect, integrity, commitment, teamwork, citizenship and accountability.
  • Foster resilience, self-belief and independence so that students are prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the future.
  • Nurture caring, responsible young citizens who make positive contributions to their communities both now and in later life.

Implementation

We put our curriculum intent into practice through a coherent and inclusive approach to teaching, learning and personal development.

  • Curriculum sequencing: Subject leaders design coherent learning journeys that build knowledge and skills progressively, ensuring students secure essential foundations before moving on to more complex concepts and applications.
  • Excellent teaching: High-quality teaching across all subjects promotes deep understanding, challenge and academic success, enabling every student to fulfil their potential.
  • Literacy and numeracy: Foundational literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills are explicitly developed across the curriculum and embedded within schemes of learning, supporting success in all subjects and beyond school.
  • Personal development: Careers education, character development, enrichment opportunities and our core values are woven throughout lessons, tutor time and pastoral programmes, helping students develop as well-rounded individuals.
  • Inclusive practice: Teachers use assessment information and adaptive teaching strategies to ensure all learners, including those with SEND, vulnerable students and those with varying starting points, can access and succeed within the curriculum.
  • Subject expertise: Subject teams collaborate to identify misconceptions, share best practice and develop high-quality resources that secure learning and raise standards.
  • Assessment for learning: Regular formative assessment and retrieval practice help teachers identify next steps, address gaps in understanding and support long-term retention of knowledge.
  • Community and aspiration: Learning is enriched through wider opportunities, employer encounters, visits, enrichment activities and community engagement that broaden horizons and raise aspirations.

Impact

We regularly evaluate the impact of our curriculum to ensure that students are achieving well, developing personally and becoming successful members of their communities.

We measure impact through:

  • KS3 progress: Progress is monitored through our internal assessment system, DCPro, providing students, parents and staff with clear information about attainment, progress and any gaps in learning.
  • KS4 attainment and progress: GCSE attainment and progress measures are reviewed annually by subject, cohort and pupil group to evaluate outcomes and inform school improvement.
  • Literacy and numeracy outcomes: Foundational knowledge and skills are monitored through English and Mathematics performance alongside annual nationally benchmarked assessments, including GL Assessments.
  • SEND and EHCP outcomes: Individual targets and outcomes for students with SEND and EHCPs are reviewed regularly to ensure appropriate support and sustained progress.
  • Behaviour and attendance: Positive behaviour, engagement and strong attendance demonstrate the impact of an ambitious and inclusive curriculum that motivates students to learn.
  • Student voice and enrichment: Student feedback and participation in enrichment opportunities help shape future curriculum developments and ensure provision meets the needs and aspirations of our learners.
  • Personal development and destinations: Students leave Lostock Hall Academy as ambitious, resilient and well-prepared young people, ready for the next stage of education, training or employment and able to make a positive contribution to society.

Through our curriculum, students develop the knowledge, character and confidence to succeed in an ever-changing world. By combining high academic standards with strong values and exceptional support, we ensure that every young person is prepared to thrive and make a positive difference to the communities they belong to, both now and in the future.
