Intent
Our Business Studies curriculum is designed to equip all students with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to succeed in further education, apprenticeships and the world of work. In line with Lostock Hall Academy’s commitment to inspiring aspirations for all, we provide an inclusive and engaging learning experience that enables every student to fulfil their potential.
Through the study of business, students develop a broad understanding of how organisations operate, alongside the key principles that drive decision-making in the modern economy. We encourage students to think critically, solve problems confidently and apply their learning to real-world contexts.
Our curriculum promotes ambition, resilience and independence, providing clear pathways to further study at Level 3, apprenticeships and future careers. By developing both subject knowledge and transferable skills, we prepare students to become informed, responsible and enterprising members of society.
Implementation
Our Business Studies curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that all students, regardless of starting point, can develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed. In line with Lostock Hall Academy’s vision of high expectations, inclusion and aspiration for all, learning is designed to be engaging, accessible and relevant to the modern business world.
Students study a broad range of business topics, including enterprise, marketing, finance, human resources and business operations. Knowledge is built progressively, allowing students to make connections between key concepts and apply their understanding to real-life business scenarios. Lessons incorporate current business examples, case studies and practical activities to help students understand how businesses operate in local, national and global contexts.
Teaching is underpinned by a variety of evidence-informed strategies, including retrieval practice, questioning, discussion, independent research and collaborative learning. Regular assessment and feedback enable students to reflect on their progress, strengthen their understanding and develop resilience as learners.
An inclusive and adaptive approach ensures that all students are supported and challenged appropriately. Literacy, numeracy and communication skills are embedded throughout the curriculum, helping students to articulate ideas confidently, analyse information and present reasoned judgements. Opportunities to develop employability skills, such as teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making and leadership, are woven throughout the course.
The curriculum is mapped through a clear learning journey that enables students to see how their knowledge and skills develop over time. Through excellent teaching, high-quality resources and meaningful business-focused experiences, students are encouraged to become ambitious, independent learners who are well prepared for further study, apprenticeships and future careers.
Impact
Our Business Studies curriculum provides students with a strong foundation for future success. Through high-quality teaching and purposeful learning experiences, students gain the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to take ownership of their learning and achievement. They develop the ability to apply business concepts to everyday situations, make informed decisions and respond effectively to challenges.
Students leave the course with a nationally recognised qualification and a deeper understanding of the business world. They are equipped with the ambition, adaptability and real-world skills required to progress into further education, apprenticeships or employment. As a result, our students are well prepared to thrive in their chosen pathways and to make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world.
