Intent
Within the Performing Arts and Drama Department, we aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation of the arts through both our curriculum and wider enrichment opportunities. We believe that every student should have access to high-quality artistic experiences that enable them to engage with, enjoy and reflect upon a diverse range of performance styles across Drama and, at Key Stage 4, Dance.
Our curriculum encourages students to explore how performance can communicate powerful moral, social and political messages, challenging audiences to think critically and develop empathy and understanding. We foster an inclusive environment where all students feel valued, supported and confident to express themselves creatively. Through performance, students develop self-awareness, self-expression and emotional literacy, while gaining a deeper understanding of the role the arts play within society, culture and history.
We are committed to nurturing ambitious, resilient and confident young people who are willing to challenge themselves and strive for excellence. Alongside developing performance skills, students gain valuable transferable skills, including communication, collaboration, leadership, creativity, resilience and self-motivation. These attributes support success across the curriculum and prepare students for future education, employment and life beyond school.
Through our enrichment programme, students are provided with a wide range of opportunities to participate in drama and dance activities, perform for live audiences and contribute to productions through technical and creative roles such as lighting, sound and costume design. We believe that every student should have the opportunity to discover and develop their talents, raise their aspirations and experience the sense of achievement that comes from being part of a successful performance.
Ultimately, our aim is to equip all students with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to pursue Performing Arts at Key Stage 4 and beyond, opening pathways to further study, training and careers within the creative industries and related sectors.
Implementation
Through carefully sequenced learning, students build their knowledge, understanding and practical skills progressively throughout Key Stages 3 and 4. Lessons combine practical exploration, performance, reflection and evaluation, enabling students to develop both as performers and as informed audience members.
Students are encouraged to work collaboratively, think creatively and take ownership of their learning within a supportive environment characterised by high expectations and exceptional relationships. Opportunities for performance, rehearsal, feedback and reflection are embedded throughout the curriculum, ensuring that students continually develop confidence, resilience and independence.
Our inclusive approach ensures that all students can access and enjoy the Performing Arts curriculum, while enrichment opportunities further extend learning and provide meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 3, students will have developed a strong foundation of dramatic knowledge, performance skills and creative confidence. They will be equipped with the transferable skills needed to succeed across the curriculum, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, resilience and critical thinking. Students will be empowered to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and personal development.
At Key Stage 4, students build upon these foundations through a more specialised study of Performing Arts. They develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required for further study, training and employment, while continuing to grow as independent, reflective and ambitious learners.
Students leave the Performing Arts Department with a nationally recognised qualification, a strong sense of achievement and the confidence to pursue their aspirations. They are equipped not only with practical and creative expertise, but also with the personal qualities needed to thrive in future education, the workplace and their wider communities. Through their experiences in Performing Arts, students become confident, resilient and caring individuals who contribute positively to the world around them.
