Intent
The intent of the Media Studies curriculum is to empower all students to become confident, critical thinkers who can navigate and understand the complex media landscape that shapes modern society. Through a broad and inclusive curriculum, students develop a deep understanding of how media influences culture, attitudes and beliefs, while also recognising media as a powerful form of cultural expression.
Students explore a diverse range of media products, examining how they are shaped by historical, social, cultural and political contexts. In doing so, they develop an appreciation of the ways media industries influence and reflect the world around them. Media Studies encourages students to question, analyse and evaluate information with confidence, enabling them to make informed judgements and engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues.
Aligned with the Academy's commitment to high expectations and aspiration for all, the curriculum ensures that students develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills before becoming creative practitioners themselves. They are equipped with the knowledge, understanding and technological skills needed to participate successfully in the creative industries and an increasingly media-rich world.
Implementation
The Media Studies curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that all students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed. Through a broad, ambitious and inclusive programme of study, students engage with a diverse range of media forms, products and audiences, enabling them to understand how media shapes and reflects society. Media Studies is open to all students, regardless of prior attainment, experience or background, and teaching is highly adaptive to ensure that every learner can access and succeed within the curriculum.
Teaching combines the exploration of contemporary and historical media texts with the development of analytical, practical and evaluative skills. Students learn to apply key theoretical concepts, including media language, representation, audience and industry, to a wide range of case studies. Through high standards of oracy, classroom discussion encourages students to articulate ideas clearly, listen respectfully and challenge stereotypes surrounding gender, sexuality, ethnicity, age, neurodiversity and disability. Key media products studied throughout the curriculum are deliberately diverse, enabling students to consider a broad range of perspectives and experiences.
High-quality teaching promotes discussion, collaboration and independent thinking, ensuring that every student can access the curriculum and make strong progress regardless of starting point. Foundational knowledge and disciplinary literacy are explicitly taught to enable all learners to access, understand and engage successfully with increasingly complex concepts and texts. Prior knowledge and understanding are carefully assessed and revisited, allowing teachers to make informed adaptations to teaching and learning. Regular opportunities for retrieval, feedback and reflection help students secure and deepen their understanding over time.
Alongside theoretical study, students develop practical production skills through the planning, creation and evaluation of their own media products. Teachers actively model key skills and provide appropriate scaffolding to support learners in developing confidence and independence. A wide range of learning materials, resources and approaches are used to engage all learners and ensure that barriers to learning are minimised.
Students with additional needs are supported through targeted intervention, and teachers work closely with the SENDCo, families and external agencies to ensure that provision meets individual needs. Access arrangements are routinely used as students' normal way of working within the classroom, enabling them to participate fully in learning and demonstrate their understanding effectively.
The curriculum is underpinned by the Academy's commitment to high expectations, academic integrity and aspiration for all. Through excellent teaching and supportive relationships, students are encouraged to become confident communicators, thoughtful analysts and responsible creators. Students' voices are valued and respected, and lessons provide a safe learning environment in which individuals can confidently express their views, engage in constructive debate and develop informed perspectives about the world around them. This prepares them for further study, employment and life in an increasingly media-driven society
Impact
Media Studies provides students with a highly transferable set of skills that are valued across a wide range of careers and further study pathways. Through analysing and creating media products, students develop effective communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills, preparing them for success in education, employment and beyond.
The practical elements of the course provide students with meaningful experiences of media production and digital technologies, supporting progression to post-16 Media, Creative and Digital courses, apprenticeships and future careers within the creative industries. Students gain confidence in using industry-relevant processes and technologies while developing resilience, independence and problem-solving skills.
As a rich and multidisciplinary subject, Media Studies draws upon aspects of English, Psychology, Sociology and History. This breadth of learning prepares students exceptionally well for a variety of A Level courses and further academic study. In particular, the analytical and evaluative skills developed through Media Studies enable students to approach complex ideas with confidence and intellectual curiosity.
Ultimately, the impact of Media Studies is that students leave as informed, discerning and responsible citizens who are tolerant and celebrate diversity. They are equipped to evaluate information critically, challenge assumptions respectfully and make evidence-based judgements about the world around them. In doing so, they develop the confidence, ambition and resilience to contribute positively to their communities and thrive in an ever-changing society.
