Intent

The intent of the Hispanic Studies curriculum is to develop confident, independent learners who can communicate effectively in another language while gaining a deep appreciation of the cultures in which that language is spoken. It inspires curiosity, broadens horizons and encourages students to explore the wider world with confidence, developing their awareness as global citizens. Pupils are encouraged to challenge stereotypes and develop informed, respectful understanding of diverse cultures and communities.

Through a fully inclusive curriculum, all students are provided opportunities to develop their linguistic competence across the four modalities: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential, regardless of their starting point, reflecting the Academy's commitment to inspiring aspirations for all.

The curriculum is ambitious for all learners and carefully sequenced to equip all students with the knowledge and skills needed to communicate confidently and spontaneously, express their ideas effectively and develop resilience in their language learning. Students learn to analyse language patterns and structures, strengthening their literacy and communication skills across the wider curriculum.

In addition, the Hispanic Studies curriculum develops valuable personal qualities and transferable skills that support future success, including creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, independence, teamwork and accountability. Students are encouraged to demonstrate commitment in their learning, take pride in their progress and embrace challenges with confidence and determination.

Through exposure to authentic music, film, literature and cultural experiences, students gain a deeper appreciation of different perspectives, cultures and traditions. This promotes respect, inclusion and integrity while inspiring all students to consider the many opportunities available to them in an increasingly interconnected world.

Implementation

The Hispanic Studies curriculum is implemented through a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum that ensures pupils build progressively on prior learning. The curriculum ensures that all students can access, engage with and succeed in language learning. Learning builds progressively from core vocabulary and phonics to increasingly complex grammatical structures and authentic communication, enabling students to develop confidence, fluency and independence over time.

Classrooms are founded on respectful relationships where all learners feel safe to contribute, take risks, ask questions and learn from mistakes.

Teachers make learning objectives explicit, provide multiple ways for pupils to engage with learning and carefully check understanding through inclusive questioning, appropriate thinking time and structured support.

Lessons are designed to be inclusive, supportive and aspirational for all. High-quality modelling, scaffolding, retrieval practice and responsive teaching ensure that all learners can participate fully and experience success while maintaining ambitious expectations for every student. Teachers adapt learning where appropriate to meet individual needs, removing barriers to learning and ensuring all students feel valued, included and able to thrive. This reflects the Academy's commitment to providing a safe and inclusive culture where every young person is engaged, participating and supported to succeed.

Students develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through a variety of engaging activities and collaborative learning opportunities. Regular pair work, discussion and group tasks encourage teamwork, resilience and confidence, helping students become effective communicators and independent learners.

The curriculum promotes respect for different cultures, perspectives and experiences through the study of authentic resources, including music, film, literature and contemporary issues from across the Spanish-speaking world. This ensures that language learning is meaningful, relevant, and rooted in real-world contexts. Students are encouraged to reflect on cultural similarities and differences, developing the understanding, empathy and citizenship skills needed to contribute positively to modern society.

Assessment is used regularly to identify strengths and next steps, allowing teachers to provide timely support, challenge and intervention where needed. Through meaningful feedback and opportunities for reflection, students are encouraged to take accountability for their learning, celebrate their achievements and demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement. Home learning is given to develop students´ metacognition skills and self-efficacy.

Pupil voice is valued and routinely gathered through surveys, discussions and curriculum reviews. Feedback from learners helps shape teaching approaches and curriculum development, ensuring pupils feel respected, included and listened to.
